[The voice that speaks is English, posh, and sounds utterly exhausted and done with everything at the moment. Still a pleasant voice to listen to though. Could read a phone book and make it sound nice.]

I have, against all better judgment, been tasked with welcoming the new members to the Department of Enma.

Welcome. [It sounds less like an actual welcome and more "this is scripted and I am required to say the word 'welcome' somewhere in this."] This faction is for city departments with most of you being funneled directly into the law enforcement branch whether you like it or not. There is, unfortunately, no direct way to transfer out of this department until you have been part of the system for several weeks and even then it is not a guarantee. And that alone is a frustrating process. However, there are other departments within this building that you can find work in, such as the legal department if that is more your particular specialty.

The department is given the great burden of trying to keep order in the City amongst the other factions. It's a futile effort given the amount of problems that arise, but nonetheless you will be expected to assist in times of need. If you find the Department does not pay enough for your living expenses, I've been told you are welcome to get a second job. There is also provided assigned living quarters that are borderline adequate that you are still paying for yourself.

My name is Jonathan Sims. I work in the records and archives department. I will not answer your questions, however, superior officer Lieutenant Julieta Juris will be more than happy to answer any questions anyone has. She is experienced and has been here for some time now. I can provide directions and her office hours if new recruits need.

Maybe so. Maybe next time don't voluntell him to do this after you argue with him over whether or not being dead is an “excuse” to “give up” working in a department he hates from the outset and just accept his transfer request the first time.]

We are currently investigating a kidnapping that happened at the most recent festival. We have some leads as to the whereabouts, but are still looking into some details.

That has been my experience as well, or some alternate version of Earth that's just slightly different.

Unfortunately, I was not able to keep up with American politicking [2004, Jon was a scrambling uni student trying to keep his head above water] so I wouldn't be able to tell you. We had our own nonsense to sort through closer to my time.

[Well, Martin's already let half the cat out of the bag, may as well let it all go now. He'd only talked about this with Kim Kitsuragi and Cloud due to the events at his arrival, and then kept quiet until he could find evidence and proof.]

Being stuck to a desk as a glorified paper jockey is low pressure, honestly. I wouldn't mind it in any other.... field of work, as it were.

I know what you mean. I started in the mail room. [Anyone does, working their way up the ranks. Anyone who isn't of good old-fashioned breeding, anyway.] Not a fan of law specifically?

The police, specifically.

[Sorry, Kim, but Jon has made his distaste of the cops in this office very clear for the last two months. Hope you don't want coffee any time soon.]

[A part of her longs to agree, but this is work, and Kim doesn't have the luxury of those kinds of opinions. Jon's clear distaste is understandable, but Jon's not the one who will sign off on her payment.

Her reply is pragmatic:]

Hopefully you'll be transferred eventually. Do a job you feel good about.

I've made some progress, from desk jockey working directly with the officers to a desk jockey working in records and archives.

They don't seem to have any intention or desire to have me work in a library or the like anywhere else.

All aspects of law enforcement need checks and balances. Even if it's not ideal for you, good paperwork means fewer opportunities for a miscarriage of justice.

I can't say I particularly care one way or the other.

[He's seen enough police work up close to know he would rather not be part of it at all. It didn't matter how good a cop Basira tried to be, there were always others around her making it worse.]
