[The voice that speaks is English, posh, and sounds utterly exhausted and done with everything at the moment. Still a pleasant voice to listen to though. Could read a phone book and make it sound nice.]

I have, against all better judgment, been tasked with welcoming the new members to the Department of Enma.

Welcome. [It sounds less like an actual welcome and more "this is scripted and I am required to say the word 'welcome' somewhere in this."] This faction is for city departments with most of you being funneled directly into the law enforcement branch whether you like it or not. There is, unfortunately, no direct way to transfer out of this department until you have been part of the system for several weeks and even then it is not a guarantee. And that alone is a frustrating process. However, there are other departments within this building that you can find work in, such as the legal department if that is more your particular specialty.

The department is given the great burden of trying to keep order in the City amongst the other factions. It's a futile effort given the amount of problems that arise, but nonetheless you will be expected to assist in times of need. If you find the Department does not pay enough for your living expenses, I've been told you are welcome to get a second job. There is also provided assigned living quarters that are borderline adequate that you are still paying for yourself.

My name is Jonathan Sims. I work in the records and archives department. I will not answer your questions, however, superior officer Lieutenant Julieta Juris will be more than happy to answer any questions anyone has. She is experienced and has been here for some time now. I can provide directions and her office hours if new recruits need.

Maybe so. Maybe next time don't voluntell him to do this after you argue with him over whether or not being dead is an “excuse” to “give up” working in a department he hates from the outset and just accept his transfer request the first time.]

We are currently investigating a kidnapping that happened at the most recent festival. We have some leads as to the whereabouts, but are still looking into some details.

[ OH this. Yes. He thought he pegged Jon's desk when he walked in, but now he's sure. ]

Bit of stir-fry, I think. There's a bag of rice in here too. Oh - and some sort of flavour packet? They had a wall of them at the supermarket.

[Thankfully it's still not in the main bullpen anymore. He's a little closer to the records department, but still in eyesight of the others.]

I see. I haven't ventured too far out of more bland foods yet. Still not sure what it'll do to my system after this long. But I'm willing to try.

That sounds just perfect, Martin. I'd like that.

[Reaching to just barely touch his fingers to Martin's elbow. Not obvious, but familiar enough.]

[ Gosh. Martin leans in just a bit in response, looking a bit lovesick. He won't kiss his boyfriend right out in the bullpen like this buuuut. ]

I hope you know how hard it is not to just scoop you up right now.

[ Martin reddens at that. ]

Do you have, er. A ranking system?

For that? Yes. Something I'll share later.

[JUST. Smiles.]

[ GOSH. He looks even redder. ]

R-right, we. Are still technically at work.

Yes, we are.

[STILL SMILING THOUGH. And starts moving a few things on his desk.]

Still. I can catch you up to speed on the whole situation currently ongoing if you like.

Oh, yes. If you wouldn't mind? I am still terribly lost.

[Deep breath as he takes a seat, ignoring literally everything on his desk now.]

Right before your lot arrived, there was a city-wide Tanabata festival. We were tasked with keeping an eye out for anything suspicious since apparently gatherings here don't always go well.

One of the main performers, a woman known as Ringo-chan, was kidnapped by a group of masked individuals. One died in the commotion, while the others got away. I followed as best I could only to see them leaving outside the city into the Wastelands. We're told not to go there, as it is just... desolate and harsh environments to live in.

Andy told me she had a source telling her that can... [He sounds so pained to say this.] speak with plants that Ringo-chan still had a flower she'd given her, and the plant mentioned they were going to a 'green place'. We don't know what that means.

Complicating matters, Ringo-chan's father is an important man in finance here in the city. There's some sort of ...issue between them, but he's offering a large reward for anyone to find her. Myself and a few others doubt that the money is real, or that she should even be returned to him. But a name that kept popping up around the festival, and by the group who kidnapped her, was 'Iron Bear'.

Andy, another officer, and I are currently looking into any records the department may have on the Wastelands or any mention of a green place. But so far, nothing's turning up.

[ Ah, Martin did miss hearing these sorts of statements. It's nice to just listen to Jon's voice without concerns over eldritch horror nonsense. ]

Oh. That is ... quite a lot. Is that the main case everyone is working on, then? Should I be out researching?

[eyediot]

That is mostly what we're working on, yes.

There's also some rustle about bounty hunters or something- [And his tone makes it clear how little he cares about that nonsense.] but honestly from what I can tell, our department head [Lord Enma himself, have some respect, Jon] is more of the .... Sit back and wait style of management.

[Jon's made the comparison to his early interactions with Elias Bouchard before, and he will make them again so help him]

[ yeah that comparison is exactly what Martin is thinking right now. ]

Ah. A sit back and watch us squirm type? Where have I heard that before?

[eyediot]

[He's trying to be very careful what exactly he says aloud in this office. Without the Eye, he's paranoid, as the Enma seems to have eyes and ears everywhere. And it's clear to Martin, at least, that Jon is choosing his words carefully.]

I feel it's more that... They are curious to see where certain leads go.

[ It’s a little nostalgic? Martin can’t help but smile.

Martin also cannot give a single fuck. Not after the worst has already happened. Two kinds of people… ]

Well that’s lovely enough if true. We’ll see I suppose.

[And Martin's no-fucks-given attitude is refreshing. From anyone else, he'd be annoyed. But from Martin? He gets it. He loves it.]

...I did miss you, Martin. I-i know I said that already, and you had no time pass, but. It's really good to see you again.

[ He laughs a bit. ]

It does help quite a bit, yes. But honestly it's been strange being here without anyone else.

Ah … yeah. Even in the apocalypse, you had me.

[Stacking some papers on his desk neatly for lack of anything else to do with his hands.]

We'll figure things out, Martin. But I would- It would... mean a lot if you stayed with me.

[ Martin's expression softens. ]
