you can even have multiple puzzles strung together with that thread.
every small solution contributes to the final solution!

Mm, perhaps the puzzles together indicate a location? Like they are each a part of a set of coordinates. So separately they wouldn't be enough to find the "killer"

The motive in the detective solving the case? Or are you suggesting the killer has some reason for killing beyond the simple impulse of it?

every detective has a reason to solve a case.
and every killer has a reason to murder someone.
no one acts without purpose in this world.

What if the killer thought they were helping people? That would be a good motive, right?

But aah, if something happened to them that helped them, maybe they'd try to have the same thing happen to other people.
Even if people normally don't survive it.
I think you could build a lot out of that, with the theme.
They'd want people to understand where they were coming from. They'd want other people to see things their way.
