[But there is actually a very palpable pause because Fukuda has to stare at his phone for a long time. Like he's only talked to Cain over text so he doesn't technically KNOW he's an adult but surely a child wouldn't be brought to hell or expected to help fight the moon?? What age would someone have to be to learn what an equation is? Obviously these particular equations wouldn't be familiar until higher grades, but surely primary school is when children first learn the word.

But then Cain is from some sort of wizard world where they don't have modern technology, for the most part. Is it possible that magic based technology completely precluded the need for the development of the sciences? But surely even the most basic of mathematics is completely unavoidable in a civilized society. He's both horrified and fascinated by the implications of a world that developed without a formalized study of mathematics and physics, or rather with one with a fundamentally different theoretical backbone.

That said, Cain didn't question the word "mathematics" so it must exist on some level. This leads to another possibility which is that Cain is incredibly stupid.]

An equation is like a mathematical sentence, where you have two values set equal to each other. An incredibly simple example would be 2 + 1 = 3

[Well unfortunately, Fukuda was pretty correct. Cain was dumb as shit and canon doesn't tell us he never really got any education that involved any sort of math beyond things like sums and numbers. Perhap Murr knew more of these things, and Cain was sure magic technology ran on some sort of principles, but as a wizard it felt kind of distasteful.]

Oh, I kinda see. I mean yeah, I learned how to add things up, especially when we need to order or distribute supplies to the army, but I've never seen tiny numbers like those before? Are they decorative?

The tiny numbers are called exponents. It's a shorthand for multiplying a number by itself, essentially.

So 2² = 2 x 2 = 4 and 3⁴ = 3 x 3 x 3 x 3 = 81.

negative exponents are a bit different, essentially it turns the value into its reciprocal, so x^-1 = 1/x

the d²y/dx² is something else entirely though. dy/dx is the derivative of an equation, which is a calculus concept that describes the rate of change in the ratio of the input and output values of a function, or the slope of the tangent line at a given point. The 2s here indicate it's the second derivative, or the derivative of the derivative function. So it's more a matter of notation than the 2s actually being used in a calculation.

It is. Like I said, an equation is like a math sentence. A language sentence has parts that make it up, like letters, words, and punctuation. A math sentence is made up of numbers, operations like addition, multiplication and so on, and then sometimes variables.

A variable is the letters in there. It stands in for an unknown or changeable numerical value.
