[It occurs to Fukuda that he has no idea what Cain looks or sounds like, and he's about to ask but when he arrives at McDonalds he spots a guy who's clearly looking for someone (which, why?? Can't Cain not see anyone.) and he hazards a guess;]

[It's a deep voice, though somehow it lacks any sort of intimidating edge.]

[Well, he can't see anyone, but he can at least sense them coming. And if he's aware of his surroundings at least, it was harder to be taken by surprise. He did feel a large presence come up next to him, and turned towards the sound of his name.]

Yeah, that's me. Are you the guy I was just talking with through this text conversation?

<small[He's still going to reach out a hand to pat the guy's shoulder, or hi five, or shake or something, because it was disconcerting to not see anyone there.]

[Fukuda does shrink away from the hand, but just long enough so he can adjust his position so that Cain can only see the non-hole side of his head, so he's giving him just this weird sidelong look. He is then meeting that hand in a high-five sort of position.]

Aah. But I'd prefer the touching to a minimum. I know you rebuffed what I said, but it really is better that way...

[Oh, well, it's not the first time Cain's had that from people. Honestly Faust has complained about it enough already so he knows when some people were just really shy about that sort of thing.

[How does he explain that he knows any normal person is going to look at him differently after they see the hole no matter how nice they are, and he wants to hold onto the illusion that someone can see him as a whole person for as long as possible?]

[Well fortunately for Fukuda, Cain is the kind of person to kick someone's door down (politely) to drag them out for sunlight and socialization.]

[And he's moving again to in front of Fukuda and oh, yeah there he spots it. Cain can't not be surprised, but at least he wouldn't see any disgust.]

[Fukuda freezes up with the alarm of someone who didn't think they were about to be caught. With how Cain had explained it, he had gotten the impression that he only saw someone while he was touching them. But here he is, clearly seeing him when they are no longer touching.

After a moment it becomes clear to Fukuda that it is a matter of Cain needing to touch someone to be able to see them going forward. He's made a mistake! A terrible mistake!! He shouldn't have let Cain touch him, he should have put his foot down! Or maybe he should not have come at all. Note to self, keep friends made on the network strictly there. Avoid face to face.]

[But in the moment, there's nothing he can do. It is what it is. At least Cain is taking the nicer tack that people take when confronted with it. He settles from surprise to vague resignation that quickly dissipates itself into his usual demeanor.]

Aah. I've had it for three years. I thought with your condition it would be okay to meet in person, but I guess I misunderstood how it works.

[Cain looked at him confused, not sure what Fukuda was thinking. He thought he had explained his condition so everyone would know...but it could very well be something else. At least the hole in his head didn't seem to be hurting him.]

Huh? Why would you not want me to see you? I mean, I'm glad that you're okay at least, cause I know humans are a lot less sturdy than wizards can be. Are you a surgeon maybe? Or-oh, do you have magic yourself?

Mm, no I'm a regular human. As long as the parts of the brain that control vital functions aren't damaged, you can survive something like this. I'm not even the only person I know of who has.
[It's just that the brain is very squishy and has a lot of vital parts, and also the blood loss.]

[The good thing was that as long as it didn't involve certain things, Cain had the attention span of an ADHD ridden cat. And really, the fact that Fukuda looked the way he did wasn't that big of a deal to him.]

No. I think there are a lot of things here from the Sage's world that wee don't have. I do believe I remember them explaining cars and cameras to us, and also the thing called a movie. Like a moving picture that doesn't use magic? Are you from this Japan place as well?

I am! Or well, I'm from Japan, but it's not... especially much like this. You'd see a district like this in a bigger city than any of the ones from my province. And even in Tokyo there aren't demons as far as I know.

Really? The cities are even bigger than this? That's amazing-I think only the West has stuff kinda like this and it's nowhere near as huge. Japan must be a prosperous kingdom.

Have you ever driven a car then? Are there really buildings that are as tall as mountains?

Well, it's not a kingdom, per se! It's democratic so we have a prime minister that's elected by the people. Though there is still an Emperor, his position is more symbolic than anything.

[Anyway, lucky for Cain this is a dog meets dog situation, so while Fukuda is surprised, he doesn't seem to mind the contact now that it's been established that Cain can see him even when they are not touching.]

I have driven a car! I'm not especially good at it, though. And well, I suppose it depends on what you define as mountain height! I know the tallest building in my province, Fukui, is the Happiring Building, which is 90 meters tall. But the tallest building in Japan is the Yokohama Landmark Tower which is 296 meters tall!

Ah, a democracy. I remember Arthur talking about something like that. He seemed interested in introducing those concepts to the Central Kingdom.

[But man, those buildings sounded super tall!! Japan sounded like an amazing place, and once again Cain desperately wanted to see the Sage's world.]

Oh I see. Does this mean you also know what things like idols and Valentine's Day are? I once helped decorate a Christmas tree because Akira said it was a tradition, especially if you have kids.

Well, except it wasn't actually a holiday for the sage to be served by beautiful women apparently...but I guess no harm was done at the end. It is fun being a witch sometimes.
