Detectives are observant, but I'm a special case. Not every detective would have noticed those things.
[Heizou has been paying attention to Baji since they first met, and during this interaction as well. He has already told him so much without speaking.] And really, just what kind of trouble will I be in?
[Don't tempt him. He can tease terribly when he has a mind to. Ah, but he might not really mind that use of the name... He gives a pleased little smile as he continues.]
You're not trying to intimidate me when I'm buying you lunch, are you?
no subject
[Challenged, putting his elbows to the table, and leaning over a little; leaning into the term 'intimidating'.
Baji figures, if he's younger, why not be a little bit of a brat, right? He's seen how it's done; Mikey and Chifuyu are brats, after all.]
That's the kinda trouble you're in. I might just steal the bite you want the most, or grab the check and hold you back by the forehead.
[He doesn't doubt Heizou's a special case, honestly. He's pretty unlike anyone Baji's ever met. Had a good attitude but was playful, could enter a riot comfortably but had a calm about him, stood out while his good manners helped him blend in. Baji liked anyone who could play nice with others or, equally, flip a table and take out ten guys at once.]

[This kid has some spice to him, that's for sure. Heizou chuckles and smiles again, and he tucks both hands under his chin with his elbows resting on the table.]
I don't think you're going to do either of those things. [And Heizou sounds pretty confident about that as well. He looks up at Baji with open amusement, his own position putting him lower down even without the younger man's leaning over him.]
But I'll tell you what. Since it obviously means so much to you, you can pay for lunch next time. That's a fair deal, right?
no subject
[Grinned back, leaning further across the table.
Which was to say, he'd allow that deal. The paying part.
He might still steal the best bite of food.]
You're lucky you're cute.
no subject
Not the first time Heizou has heard that. He's aware of his own aesthetic appeal even at his size (grown men being his height in Inazuma isn't exactly unusual), but it admittedly isn't something he gets told all that often.]
Not something I find I can use to my advantage as much as you might think. [But there is something to be said about being able to turn on the charm and be disarming because of his stature. Or for being able to manipulate people into underestimating him. Often he doesn't even need to try that hard.]
And if it makes you feel better, don't think of it as compromise. Think of it as a trade.

[At best, it was a deception. Something you could use to make people underestimate you. He'd learned that from Mikey. But the deception-- people thinking you were easy to get one over on-- typically meant you had to be stronger overall, more fortified. Because people saw something weak and pretty? And they'd often move in to try to mess it up, take advantage.
...It was part of why he liked the idea of cat rescue so much. Strays defended themselves pretty well, but there'd always be some jerk-off trying to pull their tails.]
Fine. Fair trade, then. Next one's on me.

[With that little moment of playful tension done with and Baji so interested in detectives and all, Heizou decides to follow that particular topic as he settles himself back in his chair.] Think about it. If someone has information that they're afraid to give who are they more likely to open up to? An officer in uniform or someone like yours truly? And I certainly find it far easier to conceal myself in a crowd or get into tight spots for eavesdropping than my... burlier colleagues.
[There's another of those grins. Baji ought to be used to them by now.]
Not to mention that being underestimated is something I can use against my opponents should they decide that they want to engage me in combat. They almost always expect me to be weak, until I break three of their ribs with my fist. [Heizou shakes his head.] But as I've said before, I prefer not to have to resort to those kinds of measures.
no subject
[He didn't doubt Heizou could get anyone to talk, he had that kinda disarming quality to him. Charming, or something. But it rubbed Baji the wrong way to think of anyone taking advantage of that-- or trying to.]
But yeah, the combat thing I get. Our leader's like that, too.
You'd have to be a real dumbass to mistake you for weak, but most people are real dumbasses.

[A busy, busy man who doesn't have the time to be standing around chatting to some elderly woman about a cat she had that died three seasons ago or listening to someone talk about how they're having trouble moving their stock out of a warehouse.
He has absolutely no problems with wrapping up a conversation when he's had enough of it and bouncing, and people usually forgive him for these eccentricities because he gets the job done. And if they don't... well, they don't really have an option in the matter.]
But it sounds like you have some personal experience with being on the wrong end of a conversation you couldn't get out of.
no subject
[Grinned, leaning forward again.]
Since you're a busy guy and all.
[Baji dodges the question again, adhering to turnabout being fair play. He'd rather hear about Heizou's exploits.]
